Works to keep the UK's Pier of the Year ship shape for many years to come gets underway today…⚒️🌊
Worthing Borough Council has commissioned local contractor Paine Mainwaring to carry out essential maintenance to improve the fire safety system to Worthing Pier.
The current system, which is more than 30 years old, is nearing the end of its life as winter storms and seaside conditions take its toll.
Works will involve installing specialist scaffolding underneath the wooden structure as a new water main is laid along the length of the pier. Improvements to drainage will also take place at the same time.
Teams will be based from a secure compound on the beach. It is anticipated everything will be complete by October.
A council spokesman said: "While we understand that it is not ideal that these essential maintenance works take place over the summer, unfortunately they cannot be carried out at any other time due to the higher risk of storm damage.
"The pier will remain open and accessible throughout and, once complete, this investment in our heritage will ensure our award-winning pier will stay standing for many years to come."
