Old unwanted benches poised for the scrap heap have been given a new lease of life thanks to Adur District Council.

Rather than discard them for good, the Council teamed up with local community group Men in Sheds Lancing and Sompting to revamp and restore two wooden seats for the Lancing community.

The good as new benches were unveiled by Council Park Rangers to their new owners at Crabtree Lodge in Lancing – where residents were looking forward to using the seating for many years to come.

Cllr Carol Albury, who represents Manor Ward, said: “For five years I’ve been trying to get benches put on Crabtree Lane, but unfortunately we haven't found anywhere that is a successful place for them to go, so actually it’s wonderful that they can go here.

“We have to get permission from the residents along Crabtree Lane and we just didn't get those residents to come forward.”

A resident at the Lodge in Crabtree Lane said: “It’s a fantastic present for our residents, they can enjoy this space all year round now.

“It’s going to enrich so many people's lives because at the moment they're stuck indoors, however, now they have these permanent places to sit out and enjoy the day. We’re thrilled to bits.”
