An ecologist contracted by Adur & Worthing Councils made an unexpected discovery – finding a bomb buried on top of Mill Hill in Shoreham.

Teams were relocating some slow worms on the Adur District Council-owned site yesterday when they found the mortar, which is believed to originate from World War Two.

Specialist police teams were contacted and a cordon put in place until the device was made safe by a controlled explosion.

Philippa Recce, the Councils' parks and foreshore manager, said: "It was quite an unexpected discovery but thanks to the quick response of all involved, the situation was dealt with without anyone – including the slow worms – coming to harm."
