A late night scene in South Street, Worthing? Er no actually. This was taken at 3.30pm on Monday afternoon as a strange orange and black cloud spread over the South Coast.
Lights came on all over our communities as the meteorological phenomenon which caught forecasters by surprise hung over the coast for two hours.
The mystery was cleared up by Adur and Worthing Councils’ Environmental Protection Specialist Nadeem Shad:
“The orange sun and dark sky has been caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara along with ash from the forest fires in Iberia, ” he said, ” The dust has caused shorter wavelength blue light to be scattered, making it appear red.
“The dust and ash is very high in the atmosphere and should therefore cause no local air quality issues.”
