Meet your AWCS Refuse team!
About you: I’m Wayne Slender and I’m Team Leader Driver for refuse at Adur and Worthing Council Services (AWCS). I’ve been with them for 12 years. Before that I worked as a greengrocer.
What does a typical day involve for you? My day involves driving the lorry and team to the different roads on my rounds, some walking and loading of the bins.
What’s the best part of your job? The hours I work fit in well with my other responsibilities as a father.
And the worst? Bad weather and impatient road users.
Any memorable moments? I was once chased by an Alsatian dog while collecting refuse from a front garden. I only just made it to the gate before being bitten.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve seen in the waste? A motorbike in one of the large bulk bins.
Tell us something we may not know about Adur and Worthing’s refuse service? The public don’t realise how heavy the bins are and how awkward it is to move them over rough terrain.
What advice would you give to help reduce the amount of waste we all produce? Recycle more. I see lots of recycling in general waste bins.
