WORTHING’S PIER

Worthing PierWORTHING PIER GETS FIRST CLASS HONOUR
Its been wrapped up, burnt down and rebuilt, fished from,  danced on, sung to, swam from, hosted several firework displays and witnessed the marking of several national commemorations the last being the tsunami. What is it you ask? Well the Worthing Pier has just given the national accolade of 'Pier of the Year' by all 650 members of the National Piers Society founded in 1979.

In welcoming this good news for the town, John Thorpe in charge of leisure, including the pier, said: "Naturally we are really pleased to win this prestigious award. We have a fantastic facility that all ages enjoy whether it is the theatre-goers coming along to the Pavilion Theatre or the night clubbers at the end of the pier. We will be looking to see how we can celebrate this win throughout the remainder of the year." John adds: "Although there aren't that many piers left now our pier is much loved by both our many visitors and the locals so this award will give it a further boost."

Officers are looking into how this achievement can be incorporated into the tourism marketing material being produced for this summer.

The Council spends approximately £175k per year in maintaining the pier in excellent condition and is about to spend a further £25k replacing the water main.

Pleasure steamers Balmoral and Waverley are also frequent visitors operating boat trips from the pier to Dorset throughout the summer.
