In May 2017 Mary Chapin Carpenter headed to Box, England and Real World Studios to make one of the most important records of her career with Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Kings Of Leon, Laura Marling) as her producer. Joined by her long-time collaborator on guitar Duke Levine, Mary Chapin met with a group of handpicked musicians to record some of her favourite songs from her catalogue.
“What happened at Real World was unreal,” said Mary Chapin, “It felt both spooky and spellbinding to inhabit these songs once more, with a new band of musicians who immediately seemed like old friends to me. The sessions felt charmed, full of startling moments of recognition, emotion, memory and connection.”
A bond and magic were created in short order. None of the musicians were told the song selections nor did they hear the previously recorded versions of the songs. Each session started with Mary Chapin playing the song to the band on her acoustic guitar as they sat in a circle.
From there they took off, created arrangements and made brand new recordings of these key songs from Mary Chapin’s catalogue, one from each of her twelve albums. In addition, Mary Chapin wrote a new song for the sessions, the title track “Sometimes Just the Sky”. The songs were recorded as live band takes; no overdubs.
Producer Ethan Johns commented “These kind of intuitive musicians respond to the performance. It is so important for the musicians to be led by the vocal performance. It helps to make records that have a certain kind of magic as you are all elevating together, you are all responding to each other. I would never change it for the world”.
The final result is a new method of recording and a new Mary Chapin album. An album that not only celebrates her outstanding songs, more importantly, does justice to her extraordinary career and catalogue.
